Announcement of New Campus Minister

A message from Alissa Tombaugh, Chair of the AU United Methodist Chaplaincy Board of Directors:

Greetings fellow members and friends of the AU United Methodist-Protestant Community,

I’m pleased to be able to share with you today that the AU Methodists have a new chaplain! Rev. Joey Heath has been appointed to serve in this role, starting July 1.
Here is a little more information about Joey:

Joey Heath was raised in southern Georgia where he attended college at Valdosta State University. After changing a previous plan to attend law school, he spent several years working a variety of jobs from camp counselor to working on cruise ships, which exposed him to a whole world of experiences. In 2008 Joey felt God leading him to be a part of being change in the church as a pastor. In response to this calling, he enrolled in Wesley Theological Seminary and began a Master of Divinity degree. In 2012 Joey graduated and began his first appointment at Stone Chapel UMC in New Windsor, MD. This was followed by three years at Silver Spring UMC. Joey is passionate about seeing life changing transformation in the world and being the church where all are welcomed and embraced for exactly who God has created each one to be.

Rev. Mark Schaefer, Rev. Charlie Parker, and I had the chance to meet with conference leadership today to discuss the appointment. Our outgoing District Superintendent, Rev. Joe Daniels, shared with us that Joey expressed a passion for working in an urban setting with millennials, so this appointment is a natural fit for him. Joey is excited for the chance to serve as AU’s UM Chaplain, and we’re looking forward to all the energy and passion he will bring to the role. Since his appointment is effective starting tomorrow, he’ll have plenty of time to learn the ropes from Mark over the summer, acclimate and prepare for the academic year, and begin to meet new and returning students.

Please join me in welcoming Joey to the AU Methodist community!
