Dear AU Methodist family — current and former students, partners, supporters, and friends,
Throughout this season in the church, we think about the incarnation — God with us. Now of course we remember the birth of Jesus during this time, but I think it’s also worth turning our thoughts to the ways that we can recognize God incarnate in the world around us each day.
In the context of the AU United Methodist/Protestant community, God with us may look like a college student finding welcome in a community of faith that accepts them just as they are. God with us may be seen in Fellowship of Sound groups over the years, singing praise in the Kay Spiritual Life Center and in churches around the city. We might recognize God with us as students come together to support one another through the trials of life, both during their college years and beyond. Or as they offer service with and for neighbors in need, both in the city and around the world. Those who prefer a bigger picture might even notice God with us when they hear about the ways the AU Methodist community has supported so many students in pursuing lives of service to the church and the world.
As you probably know, this year the AU United Methodist Chaplaincy staff and board of directors have been formulating a vision to support the community and ensure that it can grow in its embodiment of Christ on AU’s campus and beyond for years to come. One way we are pursuing this vision is through increasing the staff capacity to enhance programming, student engagement, and congregational connections. Thanks to your generous support, we accomplished (and exceeded!) our initial goal of raising $15,000 to support this work.
Let me say that again…thank you. Thank you.
With the money we raised this year, we will be able to maintain a part-time Associate Chaplain position for the Spring 2016 semester. We’ll also be able to start exploring longer-term options for staffing in the campus ministry and laying the groundwork for the 2016-2017 academic year. I look forward to sharing more details about how we will live into this vision in the coming months as plans are put into place. What we know at this point is that we will certainly need to raise some additional funds to sustain this vision. Since we succeeded in raising our initial goal of $15,000, we’ve decided it is time to set the bar higher!
So I invite you to continue journeying with us toward this vision. Envision the ways the AU Methodist community can continue to embody God with us. Envision the new opportunities the community might embark upon to further its witness in the world. And then act to support this vision. Pray for the AU Methodists. Join the community in worship. Spread the word about this important ministry. Donate to help support the next phase in our Next Generation fundraising campaign.
Many of you will be making end-of-the-year gifts to your favorite causes. Let me ask you to make our AU ministry one of those, and to make a final 2015 gift to our work. The AU Methodist community’s mission statement is “Love God, Serve Others, Welcome All.” I hope you will join me in envisioning the ways we may encounter God with us as we support the community in living out this mission.
Chairperson, AU United Methodist Chaplaincy Board of Directors
